Lusvardi Art is pleased to open 2025 with SAW IT COMING DID NOTHING, Flavio Degen’s second solo exhibition at the gallery.
Degen’s work delves into the fluid boundaries between reality and fiction, memory and perception, examining how modern visual culture—shaped by an overwhelming influx of digital imagery—affects our understanding of the world. Working across diverse media, including video, photography, collage, filmmaking, sculpture, painting, sound, and performance, he creates immersive installations that challenge the viewer’s engagement with time and space.
With SAW IT COMING DID NOTHING, Degen presents a new body of work consisting exclusively of paintings on stretched canvas. While painting has always been part of his practice, it is typically shown alongside video and installation works. In this exhibition, however, the focus shifts entirely to the canvas, emphasizing the contrast between the fixed image and the fluid, transient nature of his moving-image works.
Standing before these pieces, the viewer enters a liminal space—a frozen frame, a pause in an otherwise continuous stream of images. In contrast to the fleeting, ever-changing nature of digital media, these paintings resist transience, anchoring the moment in a tangible, physical reality. They prompt the question: what happens when movement is stilled? How does the mind reconstruct what is missing, filling in the gaps between frames?
The title SAW IT COMING DID NOTHING evokes a sense of inevitability, an awareness of unfolding events met with inaction. This tension between foresight and passivity mirrors the works themselves—suspended between motion and stillness, presence and absence, the ephemeral and the enduring. By arresting time and isolating fragments of a larger visual experience, Degen invites us to confront our own perception of reality and the choices we make—or fail to make—when faced with its shifting landscapes.
This exhibition offers an invitation to step out of the relentless flow of images and into the charged stillness of a singular moment—a space where memory, perception, and imagination converge.
